Make a Plan for Your Future That Reflects What is Most Important
This is one of my favorite times of the year–the beginning of a new year. This year, as I usually do, I took the time between Christmas and New Year’s to look carefully at my business and my life. This is the time of year I always evaluate what worked and didn’t in the previous year, and to look ahead at the coming year and clarify my goals and intentions.
While this may sound suspiciously like “resolutions,” I really think of it as “strategic planning.” You see, I want to make sure my life and goals are clearly reflecting my values and passions. I want my direction for 2009 to be meaningful and reflective of who I am and what I am about. I don’t just want a list of “to do’s”–just things to accomplish.
I find that when I plan the year strategically, based on the things that are most important to me, I have a much clearer direction. I have a clearer sense of what I want my outcome to be. Having a clear direction allows me to use my resources of time, energy and money most productively and efficiently. That is particularly important in these challenging times.
I’m blessed with many different opportunities, and when I have a clear direction and a strategic plan about the year’s direction, I can more easily decide which ones to pursue and which to set aside. In fact, when you have a clear direction and outcome, making decisions becomes much easier.
How can you do this strategic planning for your outcome this year? I find that I’m guided by the questions I ask myself. What is most important to me in my life and in my business? What would I like to be able to accomplish this next year? What is most important to accomplish? What best reflects who I am? What matters most to me? How can I best express my passion? Does this plan fit my life’s purpose? How can I keep the areas of my life in balance? What will I need to do more of? What will I need to do less of? What resources will I need? How does my plan fit into the broader context of my community, nation and the world?
One of the things I’ve added to my strategic plan for 2009 is a concept I learned this past year from my friend and an extraordinary coach, Alexi Sebasttien (www.LittleEffortsBigResults.com). I’ve incorporated into my self-examination the question: "What is the message you want to share with the world, the message that defines you?" For me, the message I want the world to know is that “Change is possible and doesn’t have to be difficult.” I want my activities this year to reflect this message, and to incorporate it as I plan my programs for the coming year.
Having a clear outcome is the first step, but I think it is the most important. If you don’t know what outcome you want, you won’t have the clear focus necessary for the next step–planning your strategy for achieving the outcome. Without that clear direction, your efforts are likely to be somewhat uncertain and erratic. You are likely to waste your resources. In fact, this lack of clarity may lead to being paralyzed. Unfortunately, it’s the perfect set-up for getting stuck or sabotaging yourself.
You don’t need to know everything as you start out. But the clearer you can be about your outcome, the better able you will be to make necessary adjustments along the way. You will be able to ask yourself what changes will be necessary to help move you toward that outcome as circumstances in your life may change.
If your outcome is important to you, and reflects who you are and your values, achieving it becomes much more compelling. It is no longer “just a resolution.” It is a declaration of who you are and your gift to the world. It is your message, your purpose. When those features combine, you are setting into motion a force field of intention for yourself and the world. That gives each of us the opportunity to make 2009 the best year ever!
WHAT’S NEXT?
If you are ready to take the next step, here’s an ACTION CHALLENGE for you:
1. Spend some time thinking about what outcome you want for 2009. Write down your answers to the following questions:
- Imagine yourself at the end of 2009, looking back on the year. What are you most pleased about? What was your biggest accomplishment?
- What is most important to you in your life? How can you reflect this in your goals and plans for 2009?
- What matters most to you?
- What do you feel passion about? Does your plan for 2009 reflect your passion?
- Does your plan for 2009 reflect your life’s purpose?
- Does this outcome reflect who you really are in your soul?
- How can you keep the areas of your life in balance as you move toward your goals?
- What message do you want to share with the world?
- Are there things you need to do more to achieve your outcome? Are there things you need to do less?
- How does your plan fit into the broader context of your community, your nation and the world?
- What resources will you need? Where can you get support for your plan?
2. From the answers to these questions, write down your plan for 2009. Make sure it is specific.
3. Next, write down your strategy or action plan for achieving it. If you have trouble with this, watch for the next newsletter, as I’ll be talking about how to write an action plan next month.
4. Break your action plan into small steps and have a deadline for each. This keeps you moving forward without feeling overwhelmed.
